APEX OF THE MAYA FOREST

Jaguars in Belize

Belize holds some of the healthiest remaining jaguar populations in Central America, and our private reserve gives these remarkable cats the space and habitat they need to thrive.

An Apex Predator and an Indicator Species

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is the largest cat native to the Americas and the third-largest big cat in the world, after the tiger and the lion. Solitary and territorial, a single jaguar in this region typically ranges across 9 to 10 square miles of rainforest.

Conservationists track jaguars closely because they're what's known as an indicator species. A healthy, breeding jaguar population is a reliable sign that an entire rainforest ecosystem, from prey animals to water sources to tree cover, is functioning well. Protect enough habitat for jaguars, and everything underneath them in the food web benefits too.

Jaguars at Chan Chich

Trail cameras placed across our property have individually identified 9 distinct jaguars by their unique spot patterns, each holding a territory of roughly 9 to 10 square miles. All five of Belize's wild cat species, jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay, and jaguarundi, have been documented on the property’s trail camera, which is a rare distinction for any single property. Many guests have reported sighting of all five wild cats, but not in a single trip.

Every memory card that comes off those cameras is reviewed by hand by Emil Flota, our resident wildlife enthusiast, who has monitored the trail cameras for more than five years. In addition to Emil, many jaguar researchers visit during the year to study these majestic creatures and review camera footage Click here to view footage of these majestic animals.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the lodge hosts an evening presentation with trail camera footage, usually by Emil himself. He walks guests through the footage, comparing spot patterns side by side so it's clear these are nine different individuals, not the same jaguar passing the lens again and again. It's a level of detail that regularly surprises even guests who came in already knowing their wildlife. If Emil is not available, one of our other resident team members hosts the evening and while jaguars are the feature you get a glimpse into many other animals that appear on the trail cameras.

The trail camera program consists of five cameras are currently placed on the reserve, and there are plans to grow the program in 2027 and beyond.

Thinking of Visiting?

Here's what's useful to know if seeing a jaguar is part of why you're considering Chan Chich. The most important thing to consider is that a jaguar sighting is a genuine privilege, not a guarantee. Our trail cameras confirm they're here in real numbers, but where and when one crosses paths with a guest is entirely up to the jaguar.

Your Best Odds

  • Night drives and quiet dawn or dusk walks with our naturalist guides give you the best chance of a real, in-person encounter with any of our wild cats.

The Trail Cameras Help

  • Even if the rainforest stays quiet during your stay, our trail camera viewing sessions let you see what's been moving through the reserve.

It's a Wild Population

  • These are not habituated animals in an enclosure. That's exactly what makes a sighting here special, and exactly why it's never something we can promise.

Belize: One of the Jaguar's Last Strongholds

Belize is widely regarded as one of the most jaguar-dense countries left in the world, largely because of a handful of deliberate, decades-long conservation decisions.

  • Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Established in southern Belize and widely recognized as the world's first jaguar preserve. At roughly 128,000 acres, and closer to 250,000 acres combined with the neighboring Bladen Nature Reserve, it remains one of the most important protected jaguar habitats anywhere.

  • The Maya Forest Corridor

Jaguars need room to roam between habitats to find food, mates, and new territory. The Maya Forest Corridor is the critical link connecting the Maya Mountain Massif in southern Belize to the Selva Maya, the vast forest stretching north into Mexico and Guatemala. Without it, Belize's jaguar habitat would fracture into isolated, unsustainable pockets.

  • A corridor under real pressure

That connector has already shrunk by more than 65% over the past decade, mostly to large-scale farming, at nearly four times Belize's national deforestation rate. Conservation groups estimate a minimum of 50,000 additional acres needs protection just to keep the corridor functional, which is why privately protected reserves like Chan Chich's matter.

OUR CONSERVATION PARTNER

The Belize Maya Forest Trust

In 2021, a coalition of conservation groups, with Gallon Jug Estate among the partner organizations, secured roughly 236,000 acres of rainforest in the Cayo and Orange Walk districts, one of the largest privately protected land purchases in Belize's history. That land is now managed by the Belize Maya Forest Trust (BMFT), which runs the day-to-day work of keeping it intact.

BMFT treats jaguars as a key indicator of the rainforest's health. In a recent reporting year, its rangers ran 306 patrols covering over 8,000 kilometers, recorded 57 animal species, and photographed a mother jaguar with her cub, direct evidence of a breeding population still thriving in the rainforest.
