Is Chan Chich Right for You? What to Expect at Our Belize Rainforest Lodge
Chan Chich Lodge sits deep in the rainforest of northwestern Belize, with fifteen thatched cabanas on 30,000 private acres kept as a reserve. Within the surrounding protected land, this one small lodge offers a place to spend your days exploring the forest and watching its wildlife.
You can spend a week here without repeating a day. You can also spend a morning standing quietly in one place, watching for a bird you have hoped to see for years.
The journey takes planning, and the cabanas are simple. Understanding both is part of deciding whether Chan Chich is the right Belize jungle lodge for you. Here is what to expect, from the road in to the rhythm of your days.

Getting to Chan Chich Lodge: The Journey Is Part of the Planning
Chan Chich is at Gallon Jug in the Orange Walk District, approximately three hours by road, nonstop, from Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport outside Belize City.
On the shorter route, the final stretch after Spanish Lookout is unpaved and very bumpy. Allow a substantial part of your arrival and departure days for travel, including your flight connections and transfer.
A thirty-minute charter flight offers another way to reach the lodge. It gives you back about two hours in each direction and avoids the unpaved road, although it is the more expensive option.
Our transfers are arranged around your flight, rather than a fixed departure schedule. The road crosses private land through a gate that opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. Access can be arranged for a later landing, which is why we ask for your flight details when you book.
For a closer look at both options, explore our information on getting here by road and air.
Staying in the Rainforest: Fifteen Thatched Cabanas
Chan Chich’s fifteen thatched cabanas provide a simple place to settle into the forest. Each has:
A ceiling fan and select units with air-conditioned cooling
A mosquito-netted bed
A private veranda
Complimentary Wi-Fi
The appeal of a stay is closely connected to the time you spend outdoors. Your cabana gives you a place to rest between mornings on the trails, afternoon excursions and evenings at the lodge.
Explore the individual cabanas when choosing your accommodation.
Do the Cabanas Have Air Conditioning?
As of September 2026, two of the fifteen accommdations have air conditioning. Five additional cabanas are being fitted as part of refurbishments, with availability beginning in stages from 15 December 2026. This brings the total to seven air-conditioned cabanas.
The remaining cabanas are cooled by natural breezes and ceiling fans.
If air conditioning is important to your comfort, particularly for a longer stay, mention it when you contact us. We can confirm which accommodation will be available for your dates.
What a Day at Chan Chich Looks Like
Days at Chan Chich follow the forest’s rhythm, with early starts and time outdoors shaping much of the experience.
The main wildlife drive departs at 6:30 a.m. or 3:30 p.m. and lasts approximately two and a half to three hours. Choosing the morning departure means heading out before breakfast service, which runs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
There are more than nine miles of maintained trails to explore, along with complimentary bicycles. Bring your own walking shoes and binoculars, as neither is available to rent. Pack them somewhere easy to reach for your first morning.
Belize has a dry season and a wet season, and the timing of your visit is worth discussing with us before you settle on dates. Our guides have spent years working on this particular ground and can help you understand the experiences available here.
You can explore our activities and learn about the guides before you arrive.
Evenings at the Lodge
Dinner is served from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and the bar stays open until approximately 9 or 9:30 p.m. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, join our trail camera viewing sessions for a glimpse of the wildlife captured on camera around the reserve. Night drives and night walks are available daily, offering another way to experience the rainforest after dark.
For a quieter evening, settle in by the fire pit beneath the night sky. Whether you head out to explore or unwind after a day outdoors, evenings are part of the lodge’s appeal.
Visiting Chan Chich with Children
Children of all ages are welcome at the lodge, although we recommend the experience for ages eight and older. Wildlife watching often calls for patience and quiet over the length of a walk, which is why this age is our general recommendation.
Activities with Age Restrictions
The following guided activities are not suited for children:
Birding walks
Night walks
Archaeology walks
Medicinal plant walks
General nature walks
The general day drive, which is the main wildlife drive
Horseback riding is available for children eight and older, while younger children can be led around the corral.
Activities That Welcome All Ages
The following experiences welcome guests of all ages:
The Escarpment
Laguna Verde
Laguna Seca
The farm tour
If you are travelling as a family, tell us your children’s ages when you enquire. We can explain which activities are available and help you picture what would work best for your stay.
In particular, families hoping to take guided trail walks together should understand restrictions in advance. This is an important consideration when deciding whether Chan Chich suits your plans.
Two Ways to Spend a Week in the Rainforest
The same reserve can offer very different kinds of days. Thinking about how you like to spend your time can help you decide what you want from your visit.
For Travellers Who Like to Keep Exploring
A visit might include the Escarpment in the morning, canoeing at Laguna Verde around sundown and a night drive after dark. Different activities take you through different parts of the landscape.
If mammals are a particular interest, our wildlife pages explore the animals associated with this forest, including cats and tapir.
For Birders Who Enjoy Taking Their Time
Perhaps a morning spent watching for one canopy species is exactly your idea of time well spent.
Birding offers another way to experience Chan Chich, with patient observation and the knowledge of guides who work here throughout the year. Our birding pages explain what is on the local record and introduce the people who help guests explore it.
You do not need to be a birder to enjoy a stay. Laguna Verde, Laguna Seca, the Escarpment, the farm and the trails offer plenty of reasons to visit in their own right.
Who Chan Chich Lodge Suits Best
Chan Chich is a good fit if these priorities sound like yours:
You want to spend most of the day outside. Activities revolve around the landscape, wildlife and changing light.
You value space and seclusion. The reserve is private and accessed through a gate, with no passing traffic travelling elsewhere.
Wildlife is a main reason for your trip. It shapes the experiences that bring guests this far into the rainforest.
You are comfortable with rustic, yet comfortable accommodation. The thatched cabanas provide a base for days spent exploring the reserve.
When Chan Chich May Not Suit Your Plans
Knowing what you need from a holiday matters just as much as knowing what draws you to a destination.
If you want a short transfer or air conditioning in every room, Chan Chich will not meet those requirements. Its setting is inland and remote, the journey takes time, and air conditioning is available only in selected cabanas. If air conditioning is a must for you, please be sure it is confirmed at the time of booking.
If your available travel days are tight, consider the travel time carefully. Transfers at both ends take a meaningful portion of a short trip, especially if you plan to visit several parts of Belize.
If your priority is exploring standing Maya temples, plan accordingly. Chan Chich is built on the plaza of an unexcavated ancient Maya city but is not a public temple to be explored as the other popular sites in Belize. For standing temples, we direct guests to Caracol or Xunantunich. You can also book a multi-property trip that includes another lodge that has better proximity to those temples. A member of our team can assist you with this.
If you want your children to join guided trail walks, the activity restrictions may affect your decision. Discuss your family’s plans with us before booking so you know what is possible.
What Makes the Journey Worthwhile
The only vehicles on the reserve’s trails are ours. There is no through traffic, and the animals have the run of these 30,000 acres.
That space is central to the experience. The long road brings you to a place where your days begin and end in the rainforest, with one cozy lodge as your base.
For travellers who come for wildlife, time outdoors and the freedom to explore the same landscape over several days, that is the reason to make the journey.
Plan a Stay That Fits Your Interests
Tell us your proposed dates, how many nights you have and what you would most like to experience. Whether you picture active days exploring different parts of the reserve or patient mornings birdwatching, our team can help you decide whether your plans fit a stay here.

Chan Chich is a rainforest lodge with fifteen rustic, spacious and cozy thatched cabanas on 30,000 private acres. Each cabana has a ceiling fan, a mosquito-netted bed, a private veranda and complimentary Wi-Fi. As of September 2026, two cabanas have air conditioning, with five more scheduled to become available starting in December 2026. Luxury in our books is defined by the experience of the outdoors.

That depends on the length and shape of your trip. The lodge is 2.5-3 hours by road from Belize’s international airport, and your days here are spent on the reserve. If you have a short holiday and want to visit several regions, weigh the transfer time against the nights you can spend here.
Taking a charter flight to the lodge cuts down travel time significantly and can impact your decision on whether it is too remote or not.

Yes. Children of all ages are welcome, although we recommend Chan Chich for ages eight and older. No. The lagoons, Escarpment, farm and trails offer a range of experiences for visitors with broader interests in the rainforest. Birding is just one of the ways to spend your time here.
